Areas of work

What he works on

Three areas where engineering and artificial intelligence meet on real physical assets.

Intelligence for physical assets

Digital twins, structural monitoring and reliability models to understand how buildings, vessels and industrial facilities behave and are maintained.

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Digital Twins
  • Explainable AI

AI for engineering

Physics-informed methods, Bayesian inference and machine learning applied to engineering problems where data alone is not enough.

  • Physics-Informed Machine Learning
  • Predictive Maintenance
  • Reliability Engineering

Connected engineering knowledge

Ontologies and knowledge graphs that make the technical and regulatory knowledge of an engineering project traceable and usable.

  • Knowledge Graphs
  • LLM
  • Microsoft Azure

Projects

Selected projects

Four projects chosen because they cover different dimensions of the same body of work: structural engineering and European programmes, industrial R&D, semantic technologies and data architecture. This is not a ranking, and the rest of the portfolio is one click away.

BUILDCHAIN

Horizon Europe

Project
1 January 2023 – 30 June 2026
Emilio's participation
5 May 2023 – 14 October 2025

About the project

Development of a Digital Building Logbook (DBL) based on decentralized knowledge graphs. As a proof of concept, pilot sites integrate structural-integrity information into the graph; at Granada's Hospital Real, this enables structural data to be incorporated while preserving the security and immutability provided by blockchain.

Emilio's contribution

Managed UGR participation and led technical delivery of the Hospital Real demonstrator: continuous structural monitoring, on-site data acquisition, relational and non-relational databases, remote access through REST APIs and data-quality workflows.

OPTIMA-DONES

Project
January 2025 – December 2027
Emilio's participation
14 October 2025 – Present

About the project

Development of an Operator 5.0 approach based on a maintenance ontology that integrates information and artificial intelligence to assist operators while keeping humans at the centre of decision-making.

Emilio's contribution

Directs QUANTIA delivery and cross-partner technical coordination for an AI-enabled cognitive digital twin supporting safe maintenance and Operator 5.0 activities in highly radioactive environments.

TSEISS

INNTERCONECTA-STEP 2025

Project
November 2025 – December 2027

About the project

Applies semantic technologies to the representation, management, verification and exploitation of technical and regulatory knowledge in the AEC sector, with a BREEAM-oriented demonstrator.

Emilio's contribution

Technical coordination and project management of QUANTIA participation: planning, consortium coordination, work packages and deliverables, risk and reporting, and technical integration across the semantic, simulation and data work.

MSCA Doctoral Networks

Project
1 September 2024 – 31 August 2028
Emilio's participation
March 2026 – Present

About the project

Intelligent systems for autonomous wind power plant operations.

Emilio's contribution

Responsible for driving COGTWIN, the polyglot database developed with the University of Granada team, towards production use.

Detail and evidence

Full contribution

Responsible for driving COGTWIN, the polyglot database developed with the University of Granada team, towards production use. COGTWIN uses a multi-agent system to ingest structured and unstructured information —including Excel, CSV and PDF—, classify it against existing ontologies or extend the model when undefined concepts are encountered, store it through a Medallion Data Lake architecture, and make the resulting information retrievable through a knowledge graph and SPARQL queries.
